Philips Release New Single DIN Multimedia Receiver. - 17/02/12

Philips Australia is one of those operators that simply goes about its business of making quality audio visual products, rather than making a lot of fuss via spending endless amounts of cash on marketing hype. To that end it's proud to announce its new single DIN multimedia receiver - the impressive new CED780.

Loaded with features and boasting superior specifications to many other head units within the same genre, the new CED780 is also a little less expensive than most others with its $649 retail price. We're predicting this unit will be a smash hit with those audio enthusiasts who desire a quality audio visual source but don't have a bank account containing a one and more zeros than the Japs had in World War II. For more information, specifications and photos, head over to the Philips website.

FAQ Page Updated. - 17/02/12

Because we get asked literally hundreds of questions here each week we generally make it a rule of thumb that if we're asked the same question more than five times on any given day, it gets inserted onto the 'Frequently Asked Questions' page located within this website.

It has been updated again today with changes made to the article pertaining to 'What system for XXXX dollars' and 'Can you explain amplifier specifications and the difference between the classes?' article. To view these two articles plus many more covering an entire range of subjects including what things often cost, click here.

Focal Release New BAM Sound Deadening. - 16/02/12

As you know audio wizards Focal recently released a whole swag of new speakers including two entirely new ranges. Well naturally being somewhat fastidious it didn't just stop there - it's also developed a new sound deadening material to go with these new drivers and although the name loses a little in translation, the new BAM sound deadener is a cut above the competition because of its special triple layer design.

It's a three in one concept deadening which includes the diffuser and anti-rattle (sic) material in addition to the base sound deadening material. This explantion of the three layers is taken from the Focal website:

  • Layer 1 - honeycombed damping material.
Just like the acoustic foam inside a loudspeaker, the honeycombed damping material attenuates the speaker back wave and then increases the speaker performance.
  • Layer 2 - aluminium sheet.
An essential component to the sandwich effect realization. This process permits to increase the performance of the viscoelastic complex.
  • Layer 3 - viscoelastic complex.
Self-adhesive, the butyl complex absorbs the vibrations of the surface with which it’s in contact. It highly attenuates the outside noise that gets inside the car. Less noise means more music.

Whilst it certainly sounds like it belongs in a science fiction movie or a body building suppliment store, you're probably wondering what's it actually like? Well we've used a fair bit of it now and initial impressions are very good with it killing rattles and resonations with ease. It's also lighter than much of the competition too. BAM is available in four different amounts from simple door kits to entire boxes of the stuff but for more information and the technical sheets visit the Focal website or simply email us.

Focal Updates It Stable Introducing Two New Ranges. - 14/02/12

French audio maestro Focal is known for constantly improving and updating its extensive stable of speakers, subwoofers and amplifiers each year in order to offer you the latest technology at the most affordable prices. It's able to do this because over the last three decades it has forgotten more about high quality audio products that most other companies will ever know and during this has amassed an extensive resource pool. Therefore it was with great anticipation earlier this year that it announced it wasn't just making improvements to existing ranges but also introducing two entirely new ones.

Just to quickly explain where they'll fit in; last year with the old saying "if it isn't broken don't fit it" firmly in mind Focal examined its existing stable of drivers. It already had a successful entry level range named 'Access' and just above these are the more powerful 'Polyglass' range. For those wanting serious amounts of grunt able to shatter ear drums the 'K2 Power' range was produced and finally there is the 'Beryllium' range for the sonic purists. So with four highly successful lines already in production where would it go from here? Well seeing as most Focal speakers are well and truly aftermarket by definition and therefore require an experienced installer to physically put them in, the decision was taken to develop two new ranges that were on par with the existing traditional lines but were far more user friendly installation-wise and could easily mount in factory locations with very little additional work being required.

The entry level range is aptly called 'Integration' and is on par with the Access level of speakers. These offer superior bang for buck performance and are direct drop-in factory replacements for many cars. Being entry level means you get a healthy serving of Focal know-how in return for very little financial outlay.

For those of you who wish to remain on the factory upgrade path but are happy to spend a little more coin in order to gain further access to Focals extensive resource pool, the range above is called 'Performance' and is designed for those looking for superior power and control to the 'Integration' range.

Both these new ranges of speakers are designed specifically to slot straight into many of the more common manufacturer's cars and come in a variety of shapes and designs. There are also plenty of other technological advances injected into their design but rather than me put a thesis here regarding these, why not head over to the Focal website for a peak at these two new ranges. Or feel free to email us for further info and pricing.

Sound Deadening Paint In Stock. - 14/02/12

Whilst it's now been a few years since the discontinuation of the innovative 'SoundOff' sound deadening paint we still get many people asking us if something similar is available on the market today. Seeing as we constantly use sound deadening paint here as part of our arsenal in fighting rattles and resonations we actually developed our own upon finding out we could no longer get 'SoundOff'. To that end there is plenty now in stock available for purchase.

Used primarily for deadening subwoofer renclosures and door pods to remove their resonant ring, the liquid damping compound is a lightweight, waterbased, viscoelastic vibration damping material that can be used just about anywhere, effectively reducding noise and vibrations in car body panels as well. Being closer to a solid than a liquid though; it's measured in weight rather than volume and goes for $50 per kilogram which equates to just over a litre. You'll need around two litres to completely cover the inside of a standard one cubic foot sealed enclosure. Feel free to contact us for bulk-buy pricing and more info including all the technical specifications.

Want Digital Television In Your Ride? - 07/02/12

We get many people here wishing to add a DTV tuner to their car in order to entertain their passengers on those trips with crystal clear sound and vision. Although there are many digital television tuners on the market, many are outrageously expensive and let's face it; for many the reception isn't that flash. When it comes to the leaders of this technology, HiTV manufacturers what many consider to be perhaps the best DTV tuner on the market - the PureIII.

This taken from the HiTV website: Digital television is hailed as the next advancement since TV went colour. Imagine being able to receive signal with cinema quality pictures and sound whilst enjoying extended programming information such as traffic updates, weather reports, news breaks, TV guides and more future interactive services. Now, imagine putting all this in your vehicle! Whilst that's just the marketing spiel of course, more information on the PureIII unit and the associated aerials can be found on the HiTV website.

So far as costing goes; with two aerials these units usually go for just shy of $800 however we're having a tremendous special on them at the moment so feel free to contact us for the special price or if you require further information.

A Quality Double DIN Navigator That Won't Decimate Your Bank Account? - 03/02/12

When it comes to double DIN navigation source units we receive model after model across our desks here, not only for installation because we're an audio store but also for auditioning and ultimately reviewing for various media publications. This practice tends to lend itself to a certain degree of apathy; where one begins to grow somewhat used to them possessing very similar features and abilities. So when the Mongoose Q222 landed here yesterweek we quickly scanned through the specification list and it too does pretty much the same as all the rest. However then we stumbled its ridiculous price tag - fair dinkum it's about a thousand dollars cheaper than about ninety percent of the competition!

Yes you did read that right; the retail of this deck is $1099 and it easily performs on par with most other double DIN navigators on the market! However rather than us bore you to death whilst we list what it'll do, perhaps you should instead head over to the Mongoose website for a full rundown of the Q222's abilities. You can also email us for further information or just keep an eye out for Marty's upcoming review in the next issue of INCAR magazine.

Odyssey PC1200 Group Buy. - 05/12/11

We've received quite a few emails recently asking when we're going to offer up our next battery group buy, especially given the success of our last couple which consisted of the Optima D35 and Stinger SPV44 cells. Seeing as we tend to install Odyssey PC1200's a fair bit around here, we've decided to offer them up this time around and in the mean time have organised a special bulk buy price with the Odyssey importers.

What price you're asking? Well the PC1200 retails for $475 but if can get order numbers up over twenty then we can do them for a one-off special price of $350 and this price includes our regular free shipping. Click here for more specifications or simply visit the Odyssey section of Federal batteries' website.

Email us to take part in this offer which is strictly limited to a short time. So in other words please don't send us fifty emails the day after the special finishes, as was the case witnessed beyond our last two battery group buys.

Dynamat 10455 Bulk-Pack Group Buy! - 10/11/11

After the success of our last Dynamat 10455 bulk-pack group buy quite a few months back, we're doing it all over again! Put simply; the more we buy the better price we get from the importer. Whilst thus far we have a handful of confimed orders, overall we're looking to get over fifty like last time. For more information see the specials page.

Battery Clamps - Opinions Wanted. - 24/10/11

For those among you who own a Stinger, Odyssey or EFX battery; you'll appreciate that they're not only very hard to successfully clamp down securely but also that the few custom designed clamps available on the market tend to have an incongruous asking price. To that end; we decided to do something about this problem rather than bleat about it all day.

Now because we just happen to have a CNC router / mill at our fingertips here, we tend to machine up all matter of things from clamps and racks to speaker baffles and amplifier cable plates. So the other day when boredom was threatening to take us over we decided to knock up a basic clamp design to combat the ever shifting battery issue.

Now this is where you guys come in - can I please get people's opinions on a number of facets regarding their design. Firstly; material - the one pictured is 6061 aluminium. We could probably make them out of anything from Perspex, aluminium or stainless to more exotic materials such as Inconel, rhodium or even gold if people wanted them (and possessed the necessary fiscal fortitude). Second is the basic shape - what edge profiling, overall shape and radii looks good? Thirdly; we've just engraved our logo on there as an example. What would you have on yours? Your name? The car's branding? The stereo system's branding? The battery's branding or just some technical or victorian'esq detailing such as lines or figures? Please feel welcome to contact us with your suggestions.

Stinger Batteries Available In Australia Again. - 22/10/11

For those of you who'll admit to remembering back to the days of the Stinger 'Dry Cell Power Master' batteries (yes; those black ones with the coiled snake on the side), you'll recall they were one very sought after power cell because on top of offering a fantastic blend of quality and small size, they outputted copious amounts of power whilst possessing impressive endurance characteristics.

Putting that nostalgic moment aside; we're happy to announce that the new line of Stinger batteries are now available in Australia and this time, *cough*, they're very competitively priced.

From the Stinger website: Stinger power cells are engineered to deliver unsurpassed performance and durability for everything from street vehicles to show cars. That’s why dollar-for-dollar, amp-for-amp, pound-for-pound, Stinger batteries blow all competition away. There are four models currently available in Australia, those being the following (in order of size):

  • SPV20 (for small vehicles)
  • SPV35 (for small to medium vehicles)
  • SPV44 (for medium to large vehicles)
  • SPV69 (for large to gargantuan vehicles)
  • SPV70 (for powering a small city block)

New Installation Tutorial On The FAQ Page. - 13/08/11

Much in the same ilk as our existing component installation tutorials, we've just uploaded a new one pertaining to the Renault Megane. Basically; if we receive enough emails in any given week, we'll put a tutorial together. Just recently we've been receiving quite a few emails from various Megane owners after undertaking a fair few installations in the French vehicles. To skip the FAQ page and go straight to the tutorial, click here.

Audison BitTen Press Kit Released. - 12/08/11

At first it appeared to be somewhat of a pipe dream until about a year ago when the rumours started circulating regarding the release of the new BitTen processor. Fast forward to the here and now and we're installing them in just about anything that moves. Much to Audison's credit; this time around it didn't waste time in concocting a press kit containing all the information on these stunning units.

Click here for larger photo Click here for larger photo

In a nutshell; the BitTen is essentially a smaller version of the award winning BitOne processor. There are a few more differences between the BitOne, BitTen and BitTen.D but this is what the press kit was designed to explain in great detail. In reality; the BitTen can make any system with an amplifier (which it needs to feed into) sing to its maximum potential - in regards to both linearity and staging and imaging. To download the full press kit for this awesome product click here.

Looking For Volkswagen Install Images? - 04/08/11

As many of you already know; Fhrx Studios undertakes extensive work on Volkswagens, both via the various dealerships as well as via private owners. This sees a constant stream of the German vehicles through here and thus over the years we've compiled quite a few photos of what we install into the various Volkswagen platforms and the techniques we employ to install them.

New System Kits Available For Various Vehicles. - 04/08/11

Fhrx Studios has been developing audio / visual system kits for various cars for years now and as components improve we develop them further to enhance their performance, compatibility and speed. These kits are priced at various points but are usually centred around the $3000, $6000 and $10000 pricing points depending on what level of components you desire and what functionality and connectivity you require. These systems are designed to fully integrate into your car without damaging anything (i.e. they're completely reversible) and without rendering any existing equipment redundant such as steering wheel controls and reverse cameras. Depending on which particular system kit you choose, they can include some or all of the following components:

  • Receivers
  • Navigators
  • Digital sound processors.
  • Blue tooth compatibility.
  • iPod compatibility.
  • Visual screens.
  • Steering wheel control compatibility.
  • Component speakers.
  • Sound deadening.
  • Amplifiers.
  • Subwoofers.
  • Enclosures.
  • As there has been significant advances in both car and interface technologies over the last twelve months, these advances are reflected in the latest versions of our audio / visual system kits. Just a few that have had recent advancements affected include:
    • BMW 3-Series
    • BMW X6
    • Holden Astra
    • Holden Commodore
    • Lamborghini Gallardo
    • Lamborghini Murcielago
    • Mazda 2
    • Mazda 3
    • Mercedes C-Class
    • Subaru WRX
    • Volkswagen Golf
    • Volkswagen Jetta
    • Volkswagen Passat
Although these are the most recent ones upgraded there are literally hundreds of kits to choose from. One important issue to keep in mind is that these kits often contain fully custom fascias, panels and mounting components so not every single model from every single year can be covered (although most are). To check with us for your particular vehicle or for more information on these kits including what is contained within, please email us.

New Amplifiers From Hertz Now Available. - 22/07/11

Although it's not like we needed another range of amplifiers given the current amount of high-end amplifiers available, we thought we'd better tell you about the new range from Hertz because despite them being very good quality units, they don't have the high-end price tag so value for money is one of their leading attributes. There are a few different models and configurations available but one you might want to keep a close eye on is the five channel HPD5. These are great not only because of their performance figures, but also because of their flexibility. For example you can run front, rears and subwoofer or if you're more sound quality oriented you can just run a set of splits and subwoofer - with the HPD5 feeding 200 watts to each front speaker and 550 watts to your subwoofer!

Click here for larger photo   Click here for larger photo

Taken from the Hertz website: The HDP 5 is a D-Class five-channel amplifier suitable for complex installations, able to offer up to 950W total. The built-in crossovers are settable as Full Range and Hi-Pass at 12dB/Oct. or Hi-Pass + Band-Pass and Lo-Pass at 24dB/Oct. The extremely flexible crossover section allows the use of HDP 5 in multiple installations with excellent acoustic results. Maximum versatility also in connections: HDP 5 features the HDP IN system which, through the Speaker In and RCA inputs, provides the ability to interface with any OEM and aftermarket source. The power stage features a double power supply to ensure energy flows steadily. The double-extrusion heat sink and the Hertz logo, which is back lit and can be rotated, allow especially sophisticated installations. For more information, specifications and images visit the Hertz website and click into the 'Digital Power' section.

    The DynAudio Esotar2 E1200 Subwoofer Is Here! - 21/07/11

I'd like to say we've been sitting back patiently waiting for this subwoofer for some time now but truth be told we've been dribbling like small children in anticipation ever since its release as it's not only the subsonic component of the award winning Esotar2 range, it's also widely rumoured to be one of the best sound quality subwoofers in the world, able to play with detail that must be heard to be believed.

From the DynAudio website: Thanks to the innovative Dynaudio construction with precise parameters and extremely tight tolerances, this 30 cm (12") diameter driver reproduces the highest sound pressure levels down to the lowest notes by precisely following the amplifier’s signal, even at the highest output levels. For more information, specifications and images visit the DynAudio website.

New DRVN Amplifiers From JVC Arrive. - 19/07/11

After recently testing and reviewing JVC's flagship KD-R926BT single DIN head unit, we eagerly awaited the arrival of the new DRVN range of amplifiers with much anticipation. The first of the series arrived here a few weeks ago and today I reviewed the single channel KS-AX3101D. I'm happy to report that although it won't bend your windscreen or set any world SPL records, it is one impressive little unit, especially for those looking for a factory upgrade without decimating the bank account.

In addition to the single channel KS-AX3101D which retails for $249 there is also a two channel KS-AX3102 that retails for $179 and a four channel KS-AX3014 which only goes for $229. Put plainly; they represent great value for money and being JVC they're not just some fly-by-nighters either. For more information, specifications and images visit the JVC website.

Dynamat Bulk Pack For Free? - 22/06/11

I'm just kidding. However now that I do have your attention let me tell you what we ARE offering in regards to Dynamat bulk packs. As many of you know; this Saturday we're holding our charity BBQ, tuning & audition day and events like these tends to attract plenty of people, some of which drive in from interstate.

As with all of our functions, we generally offer cheaper 'event only' pricing on anything ordered on the day and to this end, I've had a lot of people asking if this special pricing structure includes Dynamat bulk packs. The answer is 'of course it does' and because of this I've just ordered quite a large number of them. Now sadly you won't get them free however you will pick one up for a stupidly cheap price. Just how stupid you might be asking? Well naturally it's too stupid to print so you'll just have to email us for the price. Please note; this offer is only available to people here on Saturday picking them up.

    Project Y1K is complete! - 13/06/11

As many of you know; Fhrx Studios is often associated with high end audio. This often lends itself to people making the somewhat incorrect assumption that we only deal with high end budgets as well. However if you browse through the list of brands we’re dealers for you’ll actually find quite a few of them contain entry level components.

To this end; last Sunday whilst I was here slowly becoming another victim of boredom, I had a light bulb moment where I thought 'why not build a demo car to showcase just what is possible for a seriously minute budget'? Basically the task was as follows; design and install a factory audio upgrade which would combine pleasant sound with plenty of grunt when needed. But the entire system’s components including cable, dash kit and sound deadening had to come in at one grand! Trust me that’s not an easy ask but hey; I’m always up for a challenge.

ARC Audio is a name synonymous with high quality amplification, producing superior amplifiers for longer than it cares to remember and achieving many milestones along the way. However many people are under the misapprehension that to own an ARC Audio amplifier you need to also own a small island off the coast of Queensland. Not so people. Whilst it's true that ARC Audio do have some very serious amplifiers, it also offers an affordable entry level selection too - and new XDi range is testament to that.

There are various configurations available including very nice looking three and five channel models boasting 2 x 80 and 4 x 80 respectively in addition to a subwoofer channel outputting 400 watts. Basically the AutoBlackBox sits inconspicuously in your vehicle (usually up behind the review mirror) and quietly films your driving, either inside or outside the car whatever your requirement may be. Just imagine how many post-incident scenarios would be relatively stress free if there was footage of the event proving you were not the one at fault. Also imagine how fewer negligent driving tickets will be issued in future too.

There are numerous models to choose from with varying features so why not take a look over at the AutoBlackBox website for a full explanation and run down. The current Australian retail price varies from $200 to $330 depending on model and various aftermarket accessories are also available to compliment the cameras. Sony Releases Its New 2011 Source Range. - 10/03/11

Sony doesn't require any introduction as over the years just about all of you would have listened to, seen, or at the least heard about Sony's products. So we'll skip the introductions and get straight to the point; the new 2011 Sony source range has now been released and there are some mighty fine products in there, especially ones like the new MEXBT3950U cd/receiver.

Now before some of you roll your eyes and flippantly dismiss these source units as 'more Xplod rubbish' just remember that Sony has never claimed the Xplod range to be world's best high-end audio equipment. Rather; Sony actually claim its Xplod equipment is good quality, budget upgrade equipment for those looking to get superior sound without taking out a second mortgage to pay for it - and no one can argue with that fact. For information and images of the new 2011 source range why not pay a visit to the Sony website. Alternatively; feel free to Email Us for further information.
